# Income-Based Apartments: What to Know About Applying for an Affordable Rental
Finding an apartment should be an enjoyable and stress-free experience. Before you dive right into rental-hunting, though, keep in mind that you may be eligible for an affordable rental based off of your household income. **Here are some basic steps to know about applying for an affordable apartment**.
## Eligibility
Before you apply, it’s important that you find out if you’re eligible first. Here are some of the criteria that you will likely be required to meet in order to qualify for assistance-based housing.
- Annual household income may not exceed a particular maximum
- Unit must be household’s only residence
- Family must meet size requirements to qualify for multiple bedrooms
- May need to qualify as elderly or disabled for certain developments
- Documentation of citizenship or eligible immigration status
