If you or your family has been financially impacted due to COVID-19 and is in need of assistance with unpaid rent or utilities, the SD Cares Housing Assistance Program is here to help.   **Find out how you can benefit from the SD Cares Housing Assistance Program.**   **What is Rental Assistance?** SDHDA, in collaboration with the Helpline Center and other partner agencies, is working to assist South Dakotans and fight against housing instability and homelessness. This $25 billion federal rescue effort was designed to help people pay rent and utilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Qualified applicants may receive assistance reflective of their household’s situation. If determined necessary, applicants may receive as much as 12 months of rental assistance. Assistance is in the form of a grant and does not need to be paid back.   **Where Can I Go to Apply?** Go to the [SD Cares Housing Assistance Program Application](https://sdcareshousingassistance.communityos.org/sdcares2021) to start the process. This online application portal allows you to enter your personal information, provide rental details and upload the necessary documents.   If you ever need some extra help while applying or have any questions about the process, don’t hesitate to call 211, and someone will be able to assist you with the application process and any questions you might have.   **Do I Qualify for Rental Assistance?** Qualifications are primarily based on being financially impacted due to COVID-19 and the household’s income. Applicants must also: - Be a South Dakota resident - Legally reside in the United States - Be directly or indirectly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic - Owe past-due rent or utilities (water, sewer, electricity, propane/natural gas, trash) There’s no shame in asking for help.
